Salvation is a free gift from God, which is why you can’t work for it. Salvation isn’t based on what you do but on what Jesus has already done on the cross. 

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8
